Camping Details

The Alexandria Police Youth Camp has partnered with the Peninsula YMCA in Kilmarnock, Virginia to run our camp for us. The YMCA operates the camp under their name, Camp Kekoka, although it is still officially Camp Charles Herbert Grimm, named after the son of an Alexandria Police Officer who was killed fighting with the Fourth Marine on Iwo Jima during World War II. We didn't want you to be confused on the names. Two names, one great camp.

The Alexandria Police Officers who own the camp provide both partial and full scholarships for Alexandria kids who want to attend camp but cannot afford it. The determination is made by the Board of Directors. Please contact the YMCA camp director, Cassie Leichty, at 804.435.0223 or by email at cassie.leichty@peninsulaymca.org for further information.

Alexandria kids attending camp will meet a school bus on the departing Sunday at 11:00 AM at the Alexandria City Public School's Transportation building at 3540 Wheeler Avenue, next to the city gas pumps. Returning campers should be picked up at the same location on the following Friday between 3:00 to 3:30 PM. An Alexandra Police Officer will be riding on the bus with the campers.

Operating a fun, educational and engaging program while fostering the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of our campers.

The Staff and Board of Managers of YMCA Camp Kekoka are very excited to be offering another summer of fun and sun. With five incredible, one week sessions of camp there is no reason to miss out on the fun. Camp is available for youth ages 9-15. Cost for camp is $400 per session. As always, in any YMCA program, nobody misses out because of the inability to pay. We offer financial assistance.

While at Camp Kekoka campers enjoy living in rustic cabins with 10 other campers grouped by age. Each cabin has highly trained adult counselors from all over the globe. During the daylight hours campers enjoy a well rounded camp experience which includes traditional activities like swimming, arts and crafts, and archery, as well as some unique activities like crabbing, fishing, tubing, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.

Camp Kekoka prides itself on Character Development and takes time every day to work with campers on the YMCA Character Values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Our goal is to return your camper tired and with knowledge of these four character values.
